Web Design Options.

Websites come in many different shapes, layouts and colours. Most sites will have similar layout components such as headers, footers, menus and an area for the main content. The main area can also be laid out in different formats, either using columns or boxes / tables. For example, this site is laid out in 4 columns.

As the web designer, I can design the layout of your site, colours etc. If you already know how you want your site to look, then just let me know and I can advise you about the best way to do it.
However, the best person to know about your business is you so if you can provide me with as much information as possible (your own leaflets, brochure, images etc.) it will help me to write your site's content. If you want to write the content yourself the all the better, although it may editing slightly for the website. Please ensure all the writing is your own work and not taken from any other site, as this could potentially raise legality issues.
If you require logo design or large pieces of graphics works done for your site, then there will be an additional charge of £10 per hour, as this can be time-consuming work. The addition of images provided by you is included in the design price.

Flash vs HTML

HyperText Markup Language or (HTML) is computer code that is used to tell Internet browsers how to display websites, which can be seen by anyone connected to the Internet. The code looks a little like this.

Example of HTML code Html above produces a page like this.

The code tells the browser how to present the site, the colour, size and font of the text.

However, Flash-based sites can be more interactive, making it easier than ever to include multimedia's into websites, such as moving images, movies or audio files. It has previously been a concern that Flash-based sites are hard for search engines to read, as the "spiders" that crawl web sites don't understand their coding. However, the sites that I build in Flash also produce a html version behind the scenes that the Spiders can read and, therefore, the site can be listed correctly by the search engine.

HTML-based Sites Flash-based Sites
Costs more due to amount of work and time involved Costs less due to ease of use and speed in which site can be created
Can be moved to alternative host if required Must remain on same site it was built through
Harder to update after site goes live; needs someone with HTML knowledge You can be shown very quickly and easily how to make changes to maintain and update site.

The sites I design are usually for small businesses or sole traders or therapists; basically, people like you that want to advertise their business but, are too busy or have no interest in how to set up the website. You can be involved as much or as little in the design process as you feel comfortable with.
